St. Titus - San Tito

ENGLISH:Titus (died around the year 69) is a biblical character, recipient of the Epistle to Titus of St. Paul of Tarsus and mentioned in other of his letters. Of Greek origin, he was probably converted to Christianity by Paul himself, who addressed him as a true son in the common faith.

Although Titus is not mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles, from the epistles of Paul it can be deduced that Titus had a close relationship with the apostle and that he accompanied him on his journeys. Around the year 50, Titus accompanied Barnabas and Paul to the Council of Jerusalem, where they discussed the freedom of adherence to the Hebrew law for new converts of pagan origin.

It is known from the Epistle to Titus that Titus had been put in charge of the Cretan church; later he was in charge of the one of Nicopolis in Epirus.

According to tradition, he died being bishop of Gortina, in Crete. In this city the ruins of a basilica dedicated to him are conserved. In the capital of the island, Heraklion, has a church under his advocation, in which his relics are preserved since 1966 (previously they were in Venice, where they moved during the Turkish rule of the island of Crete).

He was born a gentle and it seems he was converted by St. Paul. His virtue and his merits won him the affection of the apostle, because we found that he used it as a secretary. St. Paul sent Titus from Ephesus to Corinth to put an end to several occasions of scandal and also to appease discord in that Church. Then, St. Paul sent him a second time to Corinth to collect alms for the poor Christians of Jerusalem. Saint Paul stopped some time on the island of Crete to preach the Christian faith, but as the needs of other churches required his presence, he consecrated Tito bishop for that island and left him to finish the work he had begun. He died a quiet death at a very old age and is considered the first Archbishop of the island.

ENGLISH:

She suffered martyrdom in Catania (Sicily), probably in the persecution of Decius [249-251]. Since antiquity her cult spread throughout the Church and her name was introduced in the Roman Canon.

St. Agatha possessed everything a young woman usually desired: A distinguished family and extraordinary beauty. But she treasured much more than all her faith in Jesus Christ. This was demonstrated when Senator Quintianus took advantage of the persecution of Emperor Decius (250-253) against Christians to try to possess her. The senator's proposals were resolutely rejected by the young virgin, who had already committed herself to another husband: Jesus Christ.

Quintianus did not give up and gave her into the hands of Aphrodisia, an evil woman, with the idea that this seduced her with the temptations of the world. But her bad arts were fustigated by the virtue and fidelity to Christ that St. Agatha showed.

Quintianus then, possessed by anger, tortured the young virgin cruelly, until ordering to have his breasts cut off. It is famous response of St. Agatha: "Cruel tyrant, are you not ashamed to torture in a woman the same breast with which you fed as a child?". The saint was consoled with a vision of Saint Peter who, miraculously, healed her. But the tortures continued and finally meritorious palm of martyrdom, being cast on burning coals in Catania, Sicily (Italy).

According to tradition, in an eruption of the Etna volcano, which occurred one year after the martyrdom of Santa Águeda (c.250), the lava miraculously stopped when the inhabitants of the area asked for the intercession of the holy martyr. That is why the city of Catania has it as patron saint and the regions bordering Etna invoke it as patron saint and protector against fire, lightning and volcanoes. In addition to these elements, the iconography of St. Agatha usually presents the palm (victory of martyrdom), and some symbol or gesture that recalls the tortures he suffered.

Both Catania and Palermo claim the honor of being the birthplace of St. Agatha. In some places, the "St.Agatha's bread" and water are blessed during the mass of her feast. The Church of Saint Agatha in Rome has an impressive painting of her martyrdom on the high altar.

Ancient sources
Her office in the Roman Breviary is taken, in part from the Acts of Latinas of her martyrdom. (Minutes SS., I, Feb., 595 sqq.). From the letter of Pope Gelasius (492-496) to a certain Bishop Victor (Thiel, Epist Roman, Pont., 495) we know of a Basilica of Saint Agatha. Gregory I (590-604) mentions that he is in Rome (Epp., IV, 19; P.L., LXXVII, 688) and it seems that he was this Pope who included her name in the Canon of the Mass. We only know with historical certainty the fact and date of her martyrdom and the public veneration with which she was honored in the early Church. It appears in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum (ed. De Rossi and Duchesne, in the Act SS., Nov. II, 17) and in the Carthaginian Martyrologium dating from the fifth or sixth century (Ruinart, Acta Sincera, Ratisbon, 1859, 634). In the sixth century, Venantius Fortunatus mentions her in her poem about virginity as one of the celebrated virgins and Christian martyrs (Carm., VIII, 4, De Virginitate: Illic Euphemia pariter quoque plaudit Agathe Et Justina simul consociante Thecla, etc.).

Iconography
She has been represented in martyrdom, hanging upside down, with the executioner armed with tongs and twisting her breast. Also holding herself a pair of tongs in her hand and an angel with her breasts on a tray or herself carrying a tray or plate with her breasts cut off. The healing scene for St. Peter has also been represented. She is often depicted as protective against fire, carrying a torch or burning stick, or a candle, symbol of power against fire. A horn of a unicorn, symbol of virginity or with the palm of martyrdom, may also be present.

(Acta SS., I, Feb., 595 sqq.).

Presentation of Jesus at the Temple)は、正教会における十二大祭の一つ。
